Melvin Nicholson Photography, Top Ten Images of 2017

My Top Ten Images of 2017

WELCOME to my Top Ten Images of 2017 and a brief review of the year. AMAZING is the only word that I can use to describe 2017. My workshops have grown from strength to strength with more people joining me for some memorable trips including a couple of new international ones such as Iceland (twice this year) and Ireland back in September. My 1-2-1 tuition days have never been more popular, and I feel such enjoyment out of helping people in [...]

Photographing the Winter Freeze, Quiraing, Isle of Skye - Melvin Nicholson Photography

Photographing the Winter Freeze, Quiraing, Isle of Skye – Landscape Photography

During my two days on Skye en-route to the Outer Hebrides, I decided to visit the iconic Quiraing in harsh, wintery, freezing conditions. I walked four miles from the roadside and back to ensure that I did not become stranded by the icy conditions. I have included several images that I took yesterday afternoon (Fri 29th Dec 217). Let me know what you think and feel free to leave a comment below and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE if you wish. Here [...]

A Scottish Winter Wonderland – Shooting Snow Scenes Video

I was driving through Bun Loyne, a rather lovely part of the Scottish Highlands, especially during a wintery snowy period and I felt compelled to pull over and spend a couple of hours photographing the gorgeous views. I decided to create a video showing you what I was enjoying shooting and to explain a little about how I went about capturing the images I did. There are several edited images included in the video. Please let me know what you think. [...]

Canon M6 Mirrorless – Unboxing & Initial Review

Well I have finally taken the plunge and bought myself a mirrorless camera, a Canon EOS M6 no less. Fear not, it has not replaced my Canon 5D MK4 but it will work well as a vlogging camera (filming myself on location for my YouTube channel) as well as a lighter, smaller and more compact camera for those times when I do not want to carry a larger and heavier DSLR. I thought that I would record a short video [...]

Melvin Nicholson Photography Tour of the UK Summer 217

Melvin’s Photography Tour of the UK Summer 2017- Halfway through news update

Melvin Nicholson Photography Tour of the UK Summer 217 Day 14 and Melvin’s sat in his minibus/makeshift converted campervan (complete with single IKEA mattress and a two-burner stove). That opening sentence sounds like a line from a Big Brother show featuring the dulcet tones of Marcus Bentley (the show’s voice over guy). So I am a little over halfway around my imaginatively titled Tour of the UK (despite me only covering the southern half of the UK) and I thought that [...]

Nisi Filters Phil Norton Photography

Nisi Standard Polariser vs Landscape Polariser – See the difference

Since taken delivery of my full range of Nisi 100mm filters two weeks ago, people have asked me what the difference is between the standard polariser and the newly launched nano coated (hence the purple look) landscape polariser. To answer that question, I thought that I would conduct a test shooting the same scene twice. The first image with the standard polariser and the two image with the landscape polariser. I chose a lovely small waterfall called Galleny Force in the [...]

Nisi V5 Pro 100mm Filter System Demonstration

Last week, I contacted Phil Norton Photography and made arrangements to collect a comprehensive range of Nisi filters from him and having taken delivery of them since, I thought that I would write a quick blog about it and my decision to leave LEE filters. I have been using LEE filters for a number of years now and until recently, was very happy to do so. The quality I felt was excellent, the way the system went together and the range [...]

Fogbow signed up by The Great British Card Company

Fogbow gets signed up Last November I was extremely lucky to have found myself in the position of photographing a particularly rare white rainbow (otherwise known as a fogbow) whilst on Rannoch Moor near Glencoe in Scotland. It went viral worldwide after I shared it on social media and my agent BAV Media marketed it to the UK and the world’s press. A lot of companies and organisations contacted me at the time to express an interest in wanting to [...]

My Top Ten Images of 2016

WELCOME to my Top Ten Images of 2016 WOW, what a year 2016 has been. I have never been busier running workshops, 1-2-1 tuition days, shooting for myself as well as developing my photographic skills further with my newly purchased Canon 5Ds. I also got to shoot with some really talented photographers this year who have since become friends as well as discovering new and exciting locations in preparation for some new workshops in 2017. Places that have been on my [...]

LEE Filters, Andover, Hampshire

My visit to the LEE Filters factory

It was a last minute decision to drive the 230 miles down to Andover in Hampshire from Preston in Lancashire where I live. An opportunity to visit the LEE Filters factory came up and seeing that I have been using their range of DSLR camera filters for a number of years now and being somewhat of a quizzical nature (‘nosey’ in other words), I could not resist. Their factory tour started at 11am and ran until 2pm so I [...]

Fog Bow, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Scotland

Fogbow: Around the World in 24 Hours

Finally the dust is settling, the phone is ringing a little less than it did last week and even less than the week before and I am able to respond to my emails in a timely fashion. Who would have thought a single image could have such a huge impact on a person’s life? Not me that’s for sure. For those of you who are not aware of the story, I photographed quite a rare weather phenomenon called fogbow, on [...]
